  •  Born 12.01.54, Crewe.
  •  Married. Two children.
  •  BA (Hons), Crewe and Alsager College.
  •  Before entering Parliament was a civil servant in the Department of Employment.
  •  Member of Parliament for Colne Valley since 1997. Member of the Social Security Select Committee (1998/1999). Member of the Treasury Select Committee (2001-03). Former Sheffield City Councillor.
  •  Moved amendment to Education Standards Act to abolish caning in private education. Campaigned to keep women's & children's health services in Huddersfield Royal Infirmary. Successfully challenged alcopops advertising that was attractive to children.
  •  Member of Management Committee of Sheffield Unemployment Centre.
  •  Private Parliamentary Secretary to Des Browne MP
