- Before entering Parliament was a civil servant in the Department of Employment.
- Member of Parliament for Colne Valley since 1997. Member of the Social Security Select Committee (1998/1999). Member of the Treasury Select Committee (2001-03). Former Sheffield City Councillor.
- Moved amendment to Education Standards Act to abolish caning in private education. Campaigned to keep women's & children's health services in Huddersfield Royal Infirmary. Successfully challenged alcopops advertising that was attractive to children.
